Tunnel to Connect The US and Russia? Would it be Large Enough for T-90 Tanks?

Sarah Palin famously said she can see Russia from her front porch in Alaska, and now there is a move to allow Palin and others to take a train to the neighboring nation. If both nations agreed, engineers will build a tunnel across the Bering Strait.

Russia Today reports that this is not the first time such a tunnel has been proposed. It began in 1906, but a couple of world wars, a long Cold War and decades of mistrust between the the United States and Russia derailed the plans.

But now talk is renewed. The 65-mile long tunnel would be a key component to a 3,700-mile train route from Yakutsk, Russia to Alaska -- and eventually British Columbia, Canada.

“The project is already underway,” an official from the Ministry of Economic Development, Viktor Razbegin, told Russia Today. “The rail track to Yakutsk that we have been building for the past 15 years has always been seen as the first part of the road. It will be finished in just about a year. However, the most important is the political decision which hasn't been taken yet. There are multiple countries involved, and it will be hard.”

The tunnel is expected to cost anywhere from $30 billion to $65 billion. It would be twice as big as the "Chunnel" that connects France and England. If construction started soon, it would be done by 2045.

In fact, he's been pushing to aprove a company called LightSquared, to utilize the same bandwidth which is currently being used for GPS signals. If activated, this would take away many of the disadvantages, which our military currently holds, with GPS technology. GPS is used for everything from smart bombs, missiles, ground vehicles, aircraft, naval vessels, ground troops, even artillery shells. Any president, who would think that it is fine to allow this use of the GPS bandwidth, is not looking out for America. He's more interested in the campaign donations, which he and other Dems got from LightSquared.

As a military history expert, however, I can say with confidence that it would be impossible to launch any sort of invasion through such a tunnel. You would have to secure both ends of it, plus the air and sea above it. Doing that would be extremely difficult.
